Coppin State University Announces Dr. Lawrence T. Brown as Keynote Speaker for 125th Commencement

BALTIMORE – Coppin State University is proud to announce Dr. Lawrence T. Brown, an equity scientist, acclaimed author, scholar, curator, and game designer, as the keynote speaker for its 125th commencement ceremony. The ceremony will take place on May 23, 2025, at 9 a.m., at the Physical Education Complex Soccer Field.
Dr. Brown currently serves as a research scientist at Morgan State University's Center for Urban Health Equity, where he leads the transformative Black Butterfly Rising Initiative. He is widely recognized for his significant contributions to addressing racial equity and urban health disparities, particularly through his critically acclaimed book, The Black Butterfly.
"We are excited to welcome Dr. Brown as our commencement speaker for this year’s ceremony," said Dr. Anthony L. Jenkins, President. "His work and dedication to racial equity and community restoration will undoubtedly inspire and energize our graduates as they pursue their own paths of impact and change."
Dr. Brown is dedicated to social justice, having received the Bold Thinker award in 2018 for his work on racial segregation. He founded Black Butterfly Academy, LLC, which develops educational tools, workshops, and partnerships with schools to promote historical awareness and equity. His notable resources include the Urban Cipher board game and the Black Butterfly Dream Lab Kit.
The 125th commencement ceremony at Coppin State University will celebrate the achievements of more than 300 graduates across diverse academic disciplines. Family, friends, faculty, alumni, and members of the community are invited to attend this momentous event.
